10th Anniversary (Women's Murder Club) - by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
Three Star Rating       Fiction -
BookIt was a good book. It was nice to see what The Murder Club was up to. But it didn't seem to flow like the usual books with the girls all tackling the same crime. There were two distinctly different story lines, and a third storyline that seemed just thrown in there for good measure. None intertwined. That was ok. But I missed the girls getting together; exchanging ideas and helping Lindsay solve a murder. Lindsay’s wedding, prominently stated on the book cover, was only relevant in the first chapter. The reason for calling the book “10th Anniversary” wasn’t brought up until the last chapter. Neither are a big deal, but a bit misleading. The book did keep my interest anyway.

BookIn 13 Little Blue Envelopes, Ginny receives mysterious envelopes with instructions to fly from her New Jersey home to England from her Aunt Peg...who died 3 months ago. When she opens one envelope she must follow the instructions before opening the next one. Struggling to find herself and come to terms with her eccentric Aunt's death, Ginny takes a journey all around Europe, following the path her Aunt took while finding herself, coming to terms with her own illness. With no idea where Ginny is headed next Ginny learns about her true self and learns to trust others. This book was exciting to read and hard to put down. The adventure Ginny took was exciting and emotional and the reader can really feel it. I greatly recommend this book.

BookConnelly's crime fiction is top notch as usual; this particular novel showcases Harry Bosch, an LAPD Detective living and working on the edge; Bosch is implicated in a crime against a sadistic killer. Bosch himself is embroiled in a courtroom drama in an initially un-related case, which ends up being tied in to the murder. Very well done.

Hell's Corner - David Baldacci
Five Star Rating       Fiction -
- This is the fifth in a series of novels where Stone teams up with the Camel Club in a crime solving effort but Baldacci introduces the Camel Club in such a way that it is not necessary to read the prior books to understand the relationship between Stone and the other Camel Club members. Baldacci keeps his story in line with current world events as he utilizes state-run drug trafficking and the threat of terrorism as key elements of the novel. HELL’S CORNER is a typical suspense thriller where government agencies are always bungling the investigation and the main characters survive situations that are a bit unrealistic but necessary to add to the stories suspense. The author does add to the suspense by making it difficult to differentiate the good guys from the bad guys. Like all Baldacci novels, HELL’S CORNER is filled with plenty of twists and turns that keep the reader interested until the surprise ending.

- This is a story about a boy named Gil Goodson who wants to win the Golly-Whopper Games. The games are run by the Golly Toy Company. The prizes for the winners include a college scholarship and other "stupendous prizes." Exactly eighteen months and two days before the story starts, there was an incident where Gild's dad is accused of something he didn't do. Because of this incident, kids have been mean to Gil. While he is trying to get into the Games, Gil meets a girl named Bianca. They both get into the Games. Later in the Games, they play on the same team. For the Games, participants had to answer a lot of questions about the Golly Toy Company. I found this book was easy to read: there were not many words I did not understand.

The series began in 1994 with "The Bee-Keeper's Apprentice," in which the then 15-year-old Russell meets the retired Holmes. They realize they are kindred spirits despite their difference in age and after several years elapse, they marry. Every book is filled with mystery and adventure. 'The Language of Bees' was less satisfying than the other books for me because Russell and Holmes are separated much of the time. This lack is balanced, however, by Holmes' brother Mycroft, who is always a treat. If you like classic Sherlock Holmes stories, try the Russell/Holmes series!

Blood, Bones & Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef- Gabrielle Hamilton

- If you have ever worked a busy egg station while nearly panicking then you will like this book. Don’t know what that is? Then you will enjoy this book even more when you read about the egg station in Blood, Bones and Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton. Hamilton is a consummate writer and as it turns out an accomplished chef and proprietor of the popular Manhattan eatery Prune. Anyone who starts out breaking down animals with a knife for food and schemes to take the house for a ride by stuffing cash receipts into her beverage apron at 17 years of age (yes, embezzlement) has the right stuff and solid gear in place to become a great storyteller as well as a fine culinarian. This is a talented and tenacious woman who stands behind her words. As a reader, I am glad to consume them all until gone. The author clearly has a grasp on all things to do with gastronomy and an MFA in fiction writing. From the Hellish urban cowboy scene of the mid-eighties where her adolescent transgression takes place to her informative double and triple shifts in the catering sweatshops on the West side to her Utopian Grecian adventure. It is all so well told. Blood: she writes at times tenderly about family ties and her Italian in-law relations. Bones: meaning the structure of the thing whatever it may be. From properly executed parties, paragraphs, a menu. Life in general. Butter: well, one must read on to design his or her own perceptions on that one. You will not be sorry that you did. Just a little hungry. With such a potent skill set as Hamilton’s and with such momentum and intention going with Blood Bones and Butter expect more from this author and chef soon.

Why Johnny Can't Sing Hymns How Pop Culture Rewrote the Hymnal- T David Gordon
Three Star Rating       NonFiction -
- This book is o.k. It makes the case that hymn singing has lost its edge and traditional worship music/liturgy is not as popular because of the pop culture and music. The author makes some good points but I found the book a little too dogmatic. Certainly popular culture influences all aspects of our life, unless we intentionally find ways to avoid the influence. Popular music playing in stores, train stations, airports, 'on hold' on the phone and so forth does make the sounds familiar and may indeed make more contemporary forms of music more appealing. I do agree with the author who suggests that all worship songs/hymns be evaluated in terms of theology and scriptural reference. This makes good common sense.

- When Ruby's mother dies she is forced to travel all the way to Los Angeles, California to live with her super-famous movie star father, Whip Logan, (aka the scumbag who divorced her mom before Ruby was even born) away from her best friend and boyfriend. Hollywood seems like a foreign country to her where she's next-door neighbors with Cameron Diaz, has the room of her dreams, and attends a school where they use gongs instead of bells and take classes like "Dream Interpretation" and "The Films of Steven Spielberg". This book was easy and pleasureable (although sad) to read, written uniquely in free-form poetry and e-mails Ruby sent to her friends as well as deceased mother.

- Star must come to terms with the death of her mother while also managing a strained relationship with her step-father and dealing with school bullies alongside her best friend (turned boyfriend). While cleaning out the garage Star comes across two things that give her a clear path to what she must do: her mother's old Gibson guitar and an old letter from her (at the time, teenaged) mother to John Lennon that was never sent. While her therapist suggests Star should write a song for her mother to help things, Star never finds herself able but knows she will be once she 1) fixes the guitar and 2) hand delivers the letter to the former Beatle himself. Three Star Rating       Children -
- This book was pretty good. The plot and characterization was flawless but neither was very complex. This was a mystery book, and I figured out the many of the clues way before the character did, and it almost felt as if the main character was slowing down the story. Also, the reasoning behind most of the main characters actions were not realistic. He jumped to too many conclusions too quickly. One last criticism I have is, though it may sound petty, is about the title. The Mummy and the crypt do not effect the story very much, and the whole concept of the part of the story with the mummy is strange. I think it could have been staged differently. On the whole, I think this book would be much better fit with a younger audience.
