13 Little Blue Envelopes
Teens -
Realistic Fiction
In 13 Little Blue Envelopes, Ginny receives mysterious envelopes with instructions to fly from her New Jersey home to England from her Aunt Peg...who died 3 months ago. When she opens one envelope she must follow the instructions before opening the next one. Struggling to find herself and come to terms with her eccentric Aunt's death, Ginny takes a journey all around Europe, following the path her Aunt took while finding herself, coming to terms with her own illness. With no idea where Ginny is headed next Ginny learns about her true self and learns to trust others. This book was exciting to read and hard to put down. The adventure Ginny took was exciting and emotional and the reader can really feel it. I greatly recommend this book.Reviewed by: Ashleigh from Parchment Community Library (Parchment, Michigan)

13 reasons why
Teens -
This was a really good book. I recommend it cause it teaches you lessons about how you can hurt someone by bullying them. 13 Reasons why is a very interessting book. The main character Hannah Baker was a 17 year old girl who was new and was bullied alot by the people in her school. They hurt her so much that she committed suicide and she make 13 videos and sent them out to who ever made her do it. Clay another main character was listening to all the tapes and was trying to find out what happened.Reviewed by: Ellizabeth from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

* When I heard/read the part of the book where he went to heaven, I actually felt like I was in Heaven.
*After each chapter I would say I am going to sleep but I had to see what would happen next.

A Child Called
NonFiction -
While this story was told through the eyes of a young boy, his heartbreaking yet inspiring account of surviving severe child abuse makes putting this book down almost impossible. I also highly recommend the two follow-up books, entitled The Lost Boy and A Man Named Dave. These two books continue to follow the author Dave Pelzer's journey from childhood to young adult and finally to manhood. All three stories share his struggles and triumphs throughout life. Dave Pelzer epitomizes the human spirit.Reviewed by: Jennifer from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

A Good Man
NonFiction -
Biography
Sargent Shriver's son shares his feelings, life and flaws in this touching book about his father and the life lessons he slowly learned and now has shared with us. I laughed, cried and was awed by a man who lived his life by faith, hope and love of God following these tenets to the fullest in all he did and all the people he met on this journey. He truly found pleasure in the simple act of living.Reviewed by: Irene from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

A Good Man
NonFiction -
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its life lessons delivered. Written by Sargent Shriver's son in the form of a tribute to him, this book gives a kind and thoughtful portrayal of a man who quietly did so much. Honest and poignant, I think we can all learn from the story of the life of Sargent Shriver. (I particularly liked the piece about breaking your mirror) By all accounts, he truly was a good man. Happy reading!Reviewed by: Lisa from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

A Turn in the Road

This story unfolds like a soap opera, but a very pleasant soap opera. Debbie Macomber is a very good writer who draws the reader into her story. The story of Bethanne is a story many can relate to. She is a divorced woman who has gone from a life as a typical housewife to an independent woman with a big career. Her cross country roadtrip with her daughter and ex mother in law brings about several surprises along the way. Another very satisfying and quick reading book by Macomber. The subject, like many of her books, might make some readers uncomfortable, but I feel she handles them with sensitivity. If you are looking for a book that requires you to "think outside the box", Sing You Home will be a good choice.Reviewed by: Sharon from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
Sleep No More -
Fiction - Thriller
- "Sleep No More" is a thriller that revolves around soul transmigration, marriage, betrayal, and obsession. John Waters, a successful businessman, finds himself in a web of lies and deceit after the woman he dated in college (who also tried to kill him) reveals herself in the bodies of strangers and family members. Mallory Candler had somehow "transmigrated" into the body of a man who had raped her ten years prior, and her one consuming thought was to move from body to body in search of John. John ends up killing the woman who Mallory was currently "invading", and amidst a looming investigation he ends up confiding in a lawyer, his best friend and business partner, and his wife. The book moved too slowly for me in the beginning.Reviewed by: Tim from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The Age of Miracles -
Fiction -
- A first book by this author which deals with coming of age in an extraordinary time. The narrator is an eleven year old girl. The rotation of the earth suddenly begins to slow and the days get much longer and the nights shorter. HOw the scientists, politicians, and families deal with the problems arising from the shift of the world axis is the issue. This is a much better book than the violent, sensational "Hunger Games" from my point of view. Suitable for young adults as well as adults.Reviewed by: lee from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The Betrayal of Trust -
Fiction -
- Susan Hill, winner of many literary prizes, is herself more prized in England than here. This is the 6th book in her Simon Serrailler Crime Series - Torrential rains uncover the hidden graves of young women and like the American "Cold Cases" renew interest in old unsolved disappearances. Interesting characters and subject matter - well written. Highly recommend!Reviewed by: Lee from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The Black Cat -

The Devil Colony -
Fiction -
- I am "hooked"-page turning until 2:00 AM. Fast action with fully developed characters of the Sigma Team on a complex thriller/ mission. Additionally exposed to interesting historical facts on Morman Church (OT history, inc.) native americans combined with 21st century nanotechnology, geology. Great!Reviewed by: Sue from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The Doomsday Key -
Fiction -
- A challenging view of biogenetics and genetically altered food- serves as a warning for awareness. The action is a bit stretched but I love the Signa team and convoluted plots!Reviewed by: Sue from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The End of Everything -
Fiction -
- I read this as quickly as I did to get through it. The only reason I am giving this two stars is because for a bit I got a "Lovely Bones" vibe from the book and was hopeful for a good read. That being said, I was disappointed and found the book a bit disturbing.
As a bit of a warning, this is NOT a young adult read despite the characters and look of the book. It is anything but.
Happy Reading!

The Golly-Whopper Games -
Fiction - Children's Fiction
- This is a story about a boy named Gil Goodson who wants to win the Golly-Whopper Games. The games are run by the Golly Toy Company. The prizes for the winners include a college scholarship and other "stupendous prizes." Exactly eighteen months and two days before the story starts, there was an incident where Gild's dad is accused of something he didn't do. Because of this incident, kids have been mean to Gil.
While he is trying to get into the Games, Gil meets a girl named Bianca. They both get into the Games. Later in the Games, they play on the same team. For the Games, participants had to answer a lot of questions about the Golly Toy Company.

The Language of Bees -
Fiction - Mystery
- The ninth installment in King's superlative Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series, 'The Language of Bees' reveals more of Holmes' past with the appearance of his adult son. The series began in 1994 with "The Bee-Keeper's Apprentice," in which the then 15-year-old Russell meets the retired Holmes. They realize they are kindred spirits despite their difference in age and after several years elapse, they marry. Every book is filled with mystery and adventure. 'The Language of Bees' was less satisfying than the other books for me because Russell and Holmes are separated much of the time. This lack is balanced, however, by Holmes' brother Mycroft, who is always a treat. If you like classic Sherlock Holmes stories, try the Russell/Holmes series!Reviewed by: Teresa from Parchment Community Library (Michigan)

The Man From Primrose Lane -
Fiction -
- I found this book to be well written and interesting at the beginning. I read it fairly quickly because I wanted to find out what happened next. However, toward the middle to end I found it became very confusing. I became mixed up with the characters and when the author would bounce from one time period to the next. It eventually ended up with some time traveling (which I couldn't buy into). This was not my favorite book and I did not find the end to be that satifying.Reviewed by: Holly from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The Night Angel Trilogy -
Fiction - Fantasy
- 2000 pages but well worth it! The 3 books follow the path of young Azoth, an apprentice to an unstoppable magical assassin. We follow Azoth's journey as he crawls out of his life of hunger and poverty into that of an often abused and mistreated apprentice and then to becoming a master killer himself. I loved the series because it started (first 30 pages) cliche and then took an abrupt twist and stayed original. The characters change during the series, but not to fit the story. The story often turns on the actions of the character's motives, desires, and failures. I strongly recommend trying "the way of shadows" even if high fantasy isn't your usual cup of tea. The writing is fresh and honest and that is welcome in any genre.(Included the books The Way of Shadows, Shadow's Edge, and Beyond the Shadows)Reviewed by: Anthony from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The Odds -
Fiction -
- Stewart O'Nan's latest little novel, the story of a married couple on the brink of breaking up after years of financial hardships and marital strife. On their 30th anniversary they take one last chance to defy the odds and save their marriage by betting everything - their love and their savings - on a weekend in the casino at Niagara Falls. Breezy, quick, and suspenseful reading but I found it difficult at times to sympathize with the characters. Interestingly, I found the book remarkably similar to the last book I read, Saul Bellow's Seize the Day, a story of past failures and uncertain futures focused on a single moment.Reviewed by: Joel from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

- It has been a while since I have read a crime novel and even longer since I have read a British crime novel. This book made me think I should do so more often! A great murder mystery.Reviewed by: Tom from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
The Stand -
Fiction -
- I recently re-watched the made for TV movie "The Stand". I wanted to read the book because it seemed as if important details were left out. Although the movie followed the book pretty well, I enjoyed getting to know the characters better. I enjoyed this book because it wasn't traditional horror. It was more about human nature. We like to believe that there is a very distinct line between good and bad. However, the truth is there isn't. We have both in us and what keeps the bad in check is choice. King hints that the reason the people on the Big Evil's Side are there is out of fear not because they are so different from the people on the good side. Plus, King hints that it is not the dueling higher powers that land us in a desperate situation but rather our own choices.Reviewed by: Denise from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

NonFiction -
- Wow. This is one of those books you will not forget. Despite that this is all too common in other parts of the world, we don't often think of it in the safety of where we are in the United States. Nujood was just 10 years old when her father sold her into marriage to a man that was three times her age. As one can imagine, she suffered all kinds of abuse. However, she did not tolerate it and escaped. She met up with a powerful attorney and fought for her freedom. Let Pretend this Never Happened
NonFiction -
- I am giving this book three stars as more of a "benefit of the doubt". I may be missing something here, but I didn't have the laugh out loud moments the reviewers promised. She has had quite the interesting upbringing and her husband likely did not know what he signed up for, but I wasn't really connecting to her or her story. She calls this a "mostly true memoir" and I think she likely pushed that liberty limit- otherwise, her life and upbringing really has been "out there".Reviewed by: Lisa from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

- "Grief is the price of love. You grieve as deeply as you loved...Love is the great experience of life itself."
This is how the book opens and it really just continues to inspire. Having experienced a recent loss in our family, I though the book might provide some insight and comfort. It did both and I would recommend it to most anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one.
The author is an intriguing character. Raised catholic, he reports to be very spiritual. He comes from a long lineage of spiritual mediums and identifies as one himself. Panther Baby
NonFiction -
- This book intrigued me as I have never read a book with the main focus being the Black Panther Party. Told by Jamal
Joseph, the book chronicles his childhood, involvement in the party, and subsequent incarcerations. The book ends with the author's present situation as a family man and professor. While Joseph has softened, he still appears to maintain a "no
regrets attitude". To me, that is unfortunate. While racism and discrimination should never be tolerated, the Panthers "end justify the means" mentality is something I just cannot reconcile. While I understand the genesis of their movement, I do not support the lawlessness and self described socialist philosophy. Interesting read though. Happy reading! NonFiction -
- This is more like a long article or a short book- its only about 70 pages. I would recommend it to anyone who has read Greg Mortenson's Three Cups of Tea. The author, who was also a
contributor to Mortenson's charity, basically questions much of
Mortinson's claims and his subsequent operation of the charity. In other portions, he doesn't just cast doubt, but calls Mortenson's claims patently false. Interesting read and clearly
has me wondering about much of what I read in Three Cups of Tea. I guess the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I only wish Mortenson agreed to an interview with the author as requested.

- Finally away from their boring lives in Ohio, Sadye and Demi attend a performing arts summer camp. Being filled with a plethora of references to songs and musicals any thespian or theatre-goer can relate to and enjoy.
Personally, I had picked this book out in a hurry and planned on reading a few chapters after a hectic day but I found the book very hard to put down. So I didn't. And I stayed up til 3:03 a.m. reading it and read the whole thing. Being involved with theatre I could really understand the way Sadye, the narrator, thought and I felt for her. Plus I have always wanted to go to a performing arts camp so I got to go vicariously through the book. Plus, the whole story fits with the theme of expressing yourself. Good hurried choice!Reviewed by: Ashleigh from Parchment Community Library (Parchment, Michigan)

One day, her wish becomes a reality and the quest to learn about boys commences as she also figures out how to turn back into a human.
This book was a quick read with an interesting plot but it left a few loose ends, the most penetrating one being how the heck did she turn into a fly anyways? Also I wish that the author had expanded more in the end. Okay overall.Reviewed by: Ashleigh from Parchment Community Library (Parchment, Michigan)

- When Miranda Bloom's mother leaves for England to study for a book she's writing, Miranda is forced to live with her father, step-mother, and step-sister (the former two known not so affectionately as "Demon" and "Demon Spawn"). What doesn't help her situation is that Miranda attends a school for the academically talented because she is a math genius (something she finds useless since people have calculators and all) while her step-sister is a walking Barbie Doll. When one of her best friends starts a gossip-blog about the school, Miranda is accused of being the ghostwriter, and she is blackmailed into planning The Snowflake, a dance that is the bane of the student body's social life. Girls That Growl -
Teens - Horror/Suspense
- I loved this book. It was really good. Rayne has been asked to become a cheerleader. Well not asked really but if she doesn't she is dead. So now Rayne is a cheerleader, a slayer, and a vampire. She gets on with a little help of blackmail. Typical Rayne. The cheerleaders have heard growling and a football player has come up missing. Rayne cheers and as she leaves the locker room the door locks and she hears growling and a whole bunch of chaos. When her boyfriend Jereth comes to help he opens up the doors and the room is a mess. Well, first: her best friend is completely interested in him and soon after, her friend gets up the nerve to ask him out. And he says yes. Second: as if things weren't bad enough, her mother starts dating her crush's dad. But Charlie can't help but wonder, What would happen if we kiss?

Looks -
Teens - Realistic Fiction
- Meghan Ball and Aimee Zorn seem like polar opposites in appearance. One uses food to escape the daily miseries of school while the other uses the lack of food. One is skeleton thin while the other is morbidly obese. What do they have in common? They are both so obvious they are invisible. Past secrets, a teacher-student scandal, and a poetry contest gone wrong unite the two girls in a scheme to right the wrongs in their lives.
The inside leaflet of the book reads "...as elegantly written as a poem and as painfully honest as your own diary." And boy, is that right. No words I could say...or type...could possibly give a review better that could say it better than that. Greatly recommended.Reviewed by: Ashleigh from Parchment Community Library (Parchment, Michigan)

- I loved the entire Hunger Games Trilogy, but this last book was kind of a letdown. The entire book was very depressing and most of the time the main character/ narrator had a
concussion so she couldn't see or describe things very well. Also, there were many sections of the book that were very confusing or I had to go back and re-read them many times because they didn't describe what was going on very well. The only part I liked about this book was that it was very

One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies -
Teens - Realistic Fiction
- When Ruby's mother dies she is forced to travel all the way to Los Angeles, California to live with her super-famous movie star father, Whip Logan, (aka the scumbag who divorced her mom before Ruby was even born) away from her best friend and boyfriend. Hollywood seems like a foreign country to her where she's next-door neighbors with Cameron Diaz, has the room of her dreams, and attends a school where they use gongs instead of bells and take classes like "Dream Interpretation" and "The Films of Steven Spielberg".
This book was easy and pleasureable (although sad) to read, written uniquely in free-form poetry and e-mails Ruby sent to her friends as well as deceased mother.Reviewed by: Ashleigh from Parchment Community Library (Parchment, Michigan)

While cleaning out the garage Star comes across two things that give her a clear path to what she must do: her mother's old Gibson guitar and an old letter from her (at the time, teenaged) mother to John Lennon that was never sent. While her therapist suggests Star should write a song for her mother to help things, Star never finds herself able but knows she will be once she 1) fixes the guitar and 2) hand delivers the letter to the former Beatle himself.

- Ruby Oliver starts off her sophomore year without her close friends who were lost the year before in the "boyfriend list" fiasco. She makes friends with mysterious Noel, becomes closer with her friend Meghan, and undergoes continued therapy for panic attacks she experiences when faced with the subject of her ex-boyfriend.
I was not aware of the fact that this book was a sequel to the book "The Boyfriend List" but the author left enough exposition to piece the story together in case you hadn't read it. The story was interesting enough, I suppose, but I found the way the main character thought shallow and frankly annoying. - In the midst of a failing relationship with her family, Amanda Himmelfarb (known as "Himmelfart" by those at school) faces a complicated situation concerning herself and the used-to-be guy of her dreams. While the storyline was interesting to follow the book overall seemed a bit jumbled. At the beginning of (most) chapters, there would be a fortune cookie fortune as well as randomly dispersed throughout passages. On top of that, Amanda would write poems and those would also be mixed in as well as her mother's e-mails that she was reading. - I really liked Frindle. It wasn't the best book. I did like the way it ended because frindle became a word in the dictionary.Reviewed by: Liam from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
Goddess Girls -
Children -
- I think this is a very good book for all girls and it is fun to explore the world of the goddesses.Reviewed by: Emily from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
Out of the Dust -
Children -
- This book was very peaceful. It was also sad and good at the same time. I also loved the bond between the family.Reviewed by: Grace from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)

Children - Biography

Wonder -
Children -
- This book was a very well written book. This book about a young boy with a genetic mutation is very good. It talks about him going to school for the
first time, which is hard for someone like him to do. He is also starting middle school which is hard for everyone. I recommend this book to people of all
ages looking for a good, unique read.Reviewed by: Miranda from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
You Have to Stop This -
Children -
- An okay book about magicians and old Egypt. Would recommend it to anyone who read the other Secret Series books.Reviewed by: Brianna from Freedom Public Library (New Hampshire)
